Cambodia Vows to Help Myanmar Resolve the Crisis

New York: Prime Minister Hun Sen has stated that as the chair of ASEAN, Cambodia is fully committed to helping Myanmar resolve the crisis.

Addressing the 77th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that as the chair of ASEAN, Cambodia is committed to consolidating its efforts to address common goals in benefiting the people based on the spirit of centrality, unity, and solidarity of ASEAN.

He added that the situation in Myanmar is alarming, which could have a direct impact on the security and stability of the region as a whole, but it must be acknowledged that the crisis is complicated by deep-rooted causes.

He said: "As the chair of ASEAN, Cambodia is fully committed to helping Myanmar resolve the crisis, and all our efforts are aimed at ending the violence, bringing humanitarian assistance to the needy, and building trust among all parties aiming to open a common political dialogue as defined by the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus."

The crisis in Myanmar stems from the military coup that took place on 1 February 2021, with the arrest of State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other ruling party officials by the Myanmar Armed Forces. Declaring that the election results in November 2020 were not recognized, and thus, handed over the leadership of the country to the Commander-in-Chief of the National Army, Min Aung Hlaing.

The coup has sparked protests in Myanmar as armed groups oppose the military regime. Myanmar is now a country with two governments and about 20 ethnic armed groups, which has caused one of the longest wars in the world.
